Edison Zapata

Edison Zapata creates engaging mixed media and installations to “capture the imprecise transfer of information between people from different walks of life.” Born in Venezuela, he has lived extensively in Australia, Japan, and the USA. He earned a BFA from Canberra School of Art in Australia and an MFA from Tama Art University in Tokyo. His work revolves around the topic of failed communication; this concept developed from his varied experiences as an outsider assimilating to cultural norms of where he has relocated.

His work has been featured in publications such as GLASS: The UrbanGlass Quarterly, The Japan Times, New Glass Review (The Corning Museum of Glass), Craft Arts International, Asian Art News (Japan), and The Examiner. He has exhibited internationally and domestically for the past decade in such places as The Saatchi Gallery (London), The Sydney Opera House, and The Museum of Art and Design (NYC). Zapata’s work is in the permanent collections of the Museum of American Glass, The Australian National University, and, most recently, The Ebeltoft Glass Museum in Denmark. In 2008, he was awarded a distinguished fellowship through Wheaton Arts and Cultural Center. He currently teaches as an adjunct professor at New York University.
